[TSS]: Home at last! Kind of

Hello all!  I am back in Chicago (briefly), having finished up my summer internship in New York City and taken a short jaunt to Quebec City and Montreal.  It was a fun and memorable summer, in which of course I didn't accomplish half the things I set out to do at the beginning.  But I did get to spend multiple glorious hours with Jenny, which was a delight.  So now when I read her posts, I can read them in her voice, which is just as cheerful and fun and witty as her posts are, I assure you.

But I didn't get as much time to read this summer as I wished to, and much of the reading I did do this summer was taken up by the GARGANTUAM A Dance with Dragons by George R. R. Martin, which I don't think I'll be reviewing here because, well, I don't know how to and in my opinion, nothing particularly inspiring happened in the book so my review would basically consist of something along the lines of, "Anticipation beats reality every time" or something cliche along those lines.  I will continue with the series, but I don't really see the story being neatly wrapped up in two more books, and I am disturbed by some of the characters' propensity for sexual violence.

Well, I guess that was a review of sorts for the book, but I don't have very many more up my sleeve for you guys!  And what with the new school year just around the (river)bend, it may once more become slow in these parts.  But I'll still be around, I promise!  And hopefully, in the next couple of weeks, I can get back on YOUR blogs and start commenting and adding to my TBR list once more :-)

  1. I am glad you had a fun summer! No one ever really accomplishes everything set out to do, but at least we try! When you get a spare moment you should email me. :)

  4. Welcome back!

and I am disturbed by some of the characters' propensity for sexual violence.
This is the reason I never started reading A Song of Ice and Fire in the first place.

  5. I am so glad you are back! It's been quiet around these parts without you! I am glad you had a nice summer, and woohoo for getting the chance to meet Jenny! I would love to meet her one day.

As far as the Martin books go, I have not yet begun my journey with them, but expect to some time. I bought the first 4 books in a Kindle bundle, and my husband is reading them right now. It's his kind of fantasy, so he's enjoying it, but I have to say that you spoiled me with Guy Gavriel Kay, so I am not sure how Martin and I will get along!

  6. From what I've seen of Martin reviews, I don't think I could do it either! Definitely not by plot summary - maybe by impressions or something! In any event, I don't have to worry since the whole GARGANTUAM thing has scared me off of it! :--)

  7. *waves* Hi :D

And as for Martin, well there is a reason why I do not watch the show. Too much sex (haha coming from me I know) So the books, yup

  9. It was so nice hanging out with you too! I hope you had a pleasant time in Canada -- if I ever go, you'll have to tell me what to see. No Canadian will ever tell me because I will be too busy making myself obnoxious by singing their national anthem and then demanding praise for knowing it.

  10. Enjoy your respite! Although picking up GRRM doesn't sound much like one.

  11. Kelly - Done :-)

Helen - I am back to Ann Arbor for my last year of grad school in the next week or so.

    Amanda - Yes, she is jealousy-worthy ;-)

Tracy - Thank you! I actually don't think the series was as bad in the beginning. Or, at least, there were other things in the books that made it tolerable. But less now.

Zibilee - If you do read the Martin books, we can discuss them at length! I think it may be more enjoyable to read them in close contact with each other, rather than years apart like I have. But I do not think they're as good now as they were earlier in the series.

rhapsody - Haha, yes, impressions would be much better than plot summary, I agree.

Blodeudd - Hi back! And yes, I admit I'm surprised that you haven't read those books.

Andi - Thanks, I'll be visiting your blog again shortly, too, of course!

Jenny - How very American of you, demanding praise for knowing anything at all about another person's country ;-)

Carrie - No, he wasn't one, but I'm done with him, too, so all is well again!

Glad you had such a good summer.

I haven't read the Martin series, maybe one of these days.
