Any Interest in a Possible Re-Read Challenge?

In looking over my bookshelves and my staggering, intimidating TBR list, I often feel a bit guilty about wanting to re-read some old favorite books. This is a bit ridiculous as I read for pleasure, and obviously, if I like a book, reading it again should give me pleasure. But I so rarely do it because I feel like I'm wasting time that should be spent reading books that are new to me. I have a feeling I'm not the only person who feels this way. Well, I hope I am not the only person who feels this way!

I had an idea, based on this, of hosting a challenge (my first one ever, so please be gentle with me!) in 2010 for the first six months or, if people are interested in a full year challenge (and have twelve golden favorites), the full twelve months. It would just involve splurging a little and allowing yourself the happy and comfortable feeling of settling in with a well-beloved book or author. Once a month. Or how ever many you want to sign up to read, I guess. It could be flexible, as I don't want the challenge itself to stress anyone out! Would anyone else be interested in taking part? I think it could be a lot of fun as many of us read our favorite books before we started blogging, and so re-reading them and refreshing our memory on them might allow us to make a review and spread the love. It also might help us see nuances that we missed the first time. It could be a great experiment!

Let me know if you'd be interested in taking part. You don't need to have a blog to do it- it can be open to readers of all sorts! Also, please let me know how long you'd like the challenge to be. Thanks, all!

  1. I put a re-read challenge out there that started in September and then just ended up postponing it because quite a few people said this was a bad time of year for re-reads (with all of the other challenges that were wrapping up) and I had very little participation. Yet, there were a few people that had already done re-reads so I promised to restart the challenge in the new year. Maybe you want to co-host and we can spruce it up a bit and make it more attractive? :)

  2. First time contributor here, but very frequent reader.

I like the idea of a re-read challenge, since I re-read books all the time. In fact, since I got my Kindle, I've been splurging on re-buys as much as new books.

  3. I think that sounds like a fun challenge! I love rereading good books, but find it difficult to pick up an old favorite with that staggering TBR pile glaring at me...

    I'd join!

Me and Ana (Nymeth) were talking about this exact thing just recently. We both think it is a good idea! I will just join yours and save myself some work. :)

  5. I might do it, but I have that same guilt thing going as you do, and also feel it is ridiculous but can't shake it! And yet, there are so many wonderful books I have read that I can't remember, especially before I started doing reviews, that I could see doing it. I don't know if I could do one a month however...

  6. Yes! Like Kelly said, we were talking about this recently, but we both realized we probably wouldn't have the time/availability to host it ourselves. So doooo it! I'd love some extra motivation to revisit some of my old favourites.

  7. I really wanted to participate in Kristen's challenge but didn't have time - I think the two of you should definitely do something next year, because I would be IN!!

  8. Great, everyone, thanks for your comments!

Rhapsody, I don't think we'd have strict requirements for reading a book a month. Maybe just different levels of participation throughout the year. It's not supposed to make you feel guilty or stressful! Just make you happy to revisit old friends of books and maybe introduce them to people who might not have come across them :-)

Hello, I just found your blog, and it must be fate, because I was thinking about trying to set up the very same challenge! I have so many books on my shelves that I want to re-read, and I was thinking about trying to do one a month or something. This might be a challenge I could actually complete. Do it!

  11. I am thinking that this would be a great idea for me, as I feel much the same as you do about rereads. I am open to whatever you decide with this challenge, so you can count me in!
