I might still have to check this out though.

Btw, have you ever read Kerry Greenwood's Phryne Fisher mysteries (beginning with Cocaine Blues)? It's set in the 20s but in Australia. I've only read the first but it was pretty good.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343567357202223317.post-12541467740291531572010-12-28T16:37:23.199-06:002010-12-28T16:37:23.199-06:00I hate it when a great premise doesn't live up...I hate it when a great premise doesn't live up to it's potential!Kathleenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01739982274914536036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343567357202223317.post-61189077856207461402010-12-23T22:02:12.690-06:002010-12-23T22:02:12.690-06:00The premise sounded fascinating, but it is on the ...The premise sounded fascinating, but it is on the back burner for me. (House of Wits: An Intimate Portrait of the James Family.)

I'd think of it as a cozy mystery too, it's the fashion for historical figures to be portrayed as detectives, vampire slayers, werewolves. Telling not showing is just very clunky to read.

Blodeuedd- Haha, so true! I want to know, too.

Bookmagic- Oh, that makes sense. I didn't think of a cozy mystery mostly because it involved a serial killer, but I think that would definitely have brought my expectations down, too.

Nymeth- Yes, I don't think you'd like it much :-)Aartihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02354873119188597611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343567357202223317.post-64503508050978361082010-12-23T14:04:54.375-06:002010-12-23T14:04:54.375-06:00I like the premise of this book but I'll proba...I like the premise of this book but I'll probably give it a miss, as the heavy-handed treatment of the characters would most likely drive me nuts!Ana S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/16092495983972185943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343567357202223317.post-75469313720262597482010-12-23T10:25:27.976-06:002010-12-23T10:25:27.976-06:00I liked this book but I had thought of it as more ...I liked this book but I had thought of it as more of a cozy mystery so my expectations weren't that high.bookmagichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13808845291761439603noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343567357202223317.post-27425935384654945972010-12-23T10:04:21.509-06:002010-12-23T10:04:21.509-06:00It sure made me wonder who Jack really is, so wann...It sure made me wonder who Jack really is, so wanna know!Blodeueddhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03435479623560871881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343567357202223317.post-80860059360658428912010-12-23T09:20:15.509-06:002010-12-23T09:20:15.509-06:00The premise sounds intriguing and I admit to being...The premise sounds intriguing and I admit to being a little excited when I first started reading this review, but the telling not showing drives me crazy and the fact that the mystery is so shoddily executed makes me think I probably wouldn't enjoy this one at all. It stinks really, because I love stories that speculate on the Jack the Ripper case and had high hopes for this one.
