Set roughly at the same time? Check. A ragtag group of characters? Check, though not as representative a cross-section as Chaucer invented. A trip? Check, but not a pilgrimage exactly. A frame narrative in which characters tell stories? Kind of, but not exactly. I did like the book after I got into it, but it took me a while to get into.Dana Huffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04740976543219083443noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343567357202223317.post-2892867530121168682008-09-29T19:17:00.000-05:002008-09-29T19:17:00.000-05:00Dear Booklust,My firm, Dissident Books, will relea...Dear Booklust,

My firm, Dissident Books, will release a its debut title next month: "Notes on Democracy: A New Edition." A group of travelers, yes, and they do tell a few stories, but unlike Canterbury Tales, this is not a short story collection. I did get a strong sense of the historical time and place, though, with the pervasive fear of a deadly illness people really didn't understand, and the desperate clinging to superstition. Though the travelers didn't always seem as firmly in their own time as the people they encountered.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7343567357202223317.post-34048241755469884362008-09-15T12:44:00.000-05:002008-09-15T12:44:00.000-05:00Hmm. It's always better to go in with lower expectations, in any event.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
